The original Brewin settlers arrived in the Taber area over 100 years ago and the homestead remains in the Brewin family today. Roy Brewin, third generation to that farmstead, made his own first land purchase of 67 hectares at the age of 16.
Over the next 10 years Roy’s vision for sustainable farming practices led him to organic farming at a time when the organic industry was seen as unnecessary and even regressive to the farming practices of the time. In spite of this, Roy held to his beliefs in the environment and the purity of the food supply and established Rowland Seeds in 1984.
That first farm purchase has grown and now spans over 21,000 hectares. Making the most of a mix of both irrigated and dry land, Rowland Seeds produces organic and conventional grain, seed and cereal crops, and certified organic beef.
Conservation of the environment is a core value in the ongoing operations of Rowland Seeds, and is taken into consideration at each step of planning and production. This includes protecting the riparian areas by implementing best management practices and developing a 25 hectare prairie bird sanctuary and a second wildlife sanctuary along the bordering river system.
